Millions of users publish their music via the Internet platform SoundCloud. The spectrum of users ranges from established musicians, producers, and small, independent, and little-known artists. SoundCloud has grown to become the most used service of its kind. However, there are many alternatives: Bandcamp, Mixcloud, hearthis as well as other online music streaming offers similar to SoundCloud, suitable for downloading and marketing music.

About SoundCloud

SoundCloud is the leading online music service, with which you can publish your own music. The platform is suitable for the presentation of music of all kinds: for musicians and labels alike. However, the latter are subject to certain conditions for uploading audio files: one must have the rights to broadcast and no copyright must be infringed.

The range of functions of the service has changed a lot over the years. For a long time, the website has been just as interesting for music producers as for listeners. The offer then developed mainly around music listening.

Bandcamp

Bandcamp, founded in 2007, is one of the best known alternatives to SoundCloud. It is mainly used by musicians and bands, who are not under contract with a major music label. Artists who are not under any label can still market their music on this site. Bandcamp is very popular, especially among rock and indie bands. Bandcamp for Labels was introduced in 2014, entering a new market segment. This novelty has gradually attracted various popular independent labels such as Sub Pop, Epitaph, Ipecac, Ninja Tune or Fat Wreck Chords.

Bandcamp registration is free for artists. Labels, on the other hand, must pay a subscription fee of $20 per month to have up to 15 performances on their Bandcamp page. If they exceed this number of performances, they must pay a subscription fee of 50 US dollars per month. The latter fee allows them to freely market as many songs as they want. Bandcamp allows you to sell your own tracks. As soon as you have your own account (no matter if you do it as an artist or a label), you can decide for yourself if you want to offer your music for free or for a paid download. The number of free downloads is limited, but this amount can be increased for a small fee.

The distribution of profits from music sales is relatively small: about 15 percent of the sale price goes to the platform, the rest goes to you. If an album reaches more than 50,000 downloads, this percentage drops to 10 percent. If you also offer physical media such as CDs or merchandising items, they can also be sold on this page. In the latter case, Bandcamp gets 10 percent of the sale price.

However, the website does not offer the functions of a social network. One can only follow users and share their content, as well as integrate it into another website. However, one cannot post comments or exchange messages via Bandcamp. As a musician or music provider, you can only post links to your own site or account on various social networks.
